Understanding Google Analytics GA4 Properties, Data Streams, Measurement IDs, and Product Integrations

Overview

Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is the central reporting platform for tracking website traffic, user behavior, search performance, and marketing data.

One of the biggest sources of confusion is understanding the relationship between Accounts, Properties, and Data Streams. Once this hierarchy is understood, configuring Google Analytics becomes much easier.

GA4 Hierarchy

Google Analytics is organized into three levels:

  • Account

The highest level of your Google Analytics organization.
Example:
Regional IT Services

  • Property

A property represents a business, website, or organization.
Examples:

Each property contains its own reports and settings.

  • Data Streams

Data Streams represent the actual source sending information into a property.

Examples include:

  • WordPress Website
  • Knowledge Base
  • Online Store
  • Mobile App
  • Android App
  • iOS App

Each Data Stream receives its own unique Measurement ID.

Example:

G-XXXXXXXXXX

The Measurement ID is what connects a website or application to Google Analytics.

Understanding the Main Navigation

Home

Provides a quick overview of website performance.

Displays:

  • Active users
  • Traffic overview
  • Recent reports
  • Recommendations

Reports

      Shows historical reporting including:

      • Users
      • Sessions
      • Traffic
      • Pages
      • Events
      • Engagement
      • Conversions

This is where most day-to-day reporting takes place.

      Explore

      Advanced reporting and custom analysis.

      Useful for:

      • Funnels
      • User paths
      • Segment comparisons
      • Deep analytics

      Advertising

Provides attribution and advertising performance for connected Google advertising products.

      Useful when running:

      • Google Ads
      • Campaign attribution
      • Marketing analysis

      Admin (Most Important Section)

The Admin section is where Google Analytics is actually configured.
Most of the important settings live here.

      Navigate to:

      Admin

      Data Collection and Modification
(The most important section in Google Analytics is Data Collection and Modification.)

      Data Streams
(This is the section you will visit most often when troubleshooting Google Analytics.)

Before deleting a Data Stream, always verify which Measurement ID is being used.

Remember: deleting a Data Stream doesn't just remove a name, it can affect anything still sending data to that stream.

This is the primary location for:

      • Adding websites
      • Viewing Measurement IDs
      • Renaming Data Streams
      • Updating website URLs
      • Managing website tracking

Think of this section as the "control center" of Google Analytics.

      Creating a New Data Stream

      Navigate to:

      Admin

      Data Collection and Modification

      Data Streams

      Add Stream

      Select:

      Web

      Enter:

      • Website URL
      • Stream Name

      Example:

      Website URL

      https://regionalitservices.com

      Stream Name

      Regional IT Services Website

Google Analytics will automatically generate a new Measurement

      ID.

      Example:

      G-XXXXXXXXXX

This Measurement ID must then be installed on the website.

      Renaming Existing Data Streams

Existing Data Streams may be renamed without losing historical reporting.

      Examples:

      Before:
      Peanut Butter

      After:
      Regional IT Services Knowledge Base

Renaming a stream helps keep Analytics organized while preserving existing reporting history.

Updating the Stream Name and Website URL is useful when repurposing an older stream for a new project.

      Connecting Google Products

Within Admin, Product Links allow Google services to communicate with Google Analytics.

      Common integrations include:

      Search Console

      Displays:

      • Search queries
      • Impressions
      • Clicks
      • Average Position

      Highly recommended.

      Merchant Center

Useful when managing products and ecommerce listings.

Recommended if using Google Merchant Center.

      Google Business Profile

Allows business profile information to integrate with Analytics.

      Recommended for local businesses.

      Google Ads

Connect only if actively running Google Ads campaigns.

      Google AdSense

Connect only if monetizing websites with Google AdSense.

      Search Ads 360

      Enterprise advertising platform.
(Most small businesses will not require this.)

      Display & Video 360

      Enterprise advertising platform.
(Generally, not needed for typical business websites.)

      BigQuery

      Advanced analytics and reporting.

Useful for larger organizations and custom reporting.

      Measurement IDs

Each Data Stream has its own Measurement ID.

      Example:
      G-XXXXXXXXXX

The Measurement ID is what applications use to send traffic into Google Analytics.

      Examples include:

      • WordPress
      • Knowledge Base
      • Online Store
      • Mobile Apps

Each application should use the appropriate Measurement ID for its corresponding Data Stream.

      Google Site Kit

Google Site Kit provides a simple way to connect WordPress directly to Google services, including Google Analytics and Search Console.

After connecting Site Kit, verify that it is using the correct:

      • Google Account
      • Property
      • Data Stream
      • Measurement ID

A dedicated Google Site Kit setup guide is recommended for complete installation and configuration instructions.

      Best Practices

      • Keep one Analytics Account per organization.
      • Use separate Properties when appropriate for different businesses.
      • Create separate Data Streams for each website, knowledge base, or application.
      • Rename streams to accurately reflect their purpose.
      • Preserve historical data whenever possible instead of deleting streams.
      • Document every Measurement ID and where it is installed.
      • Verify all Google Product Links after initial setup.
      • Review Data Streams before connecting WordPress or other applications to ensure the correct Measurement ID is being used.

      Technician Notes

      Practical lessons I have learned:

      • Always verify the Measurement ID before assuming a website isn't tracking.

      • Never delete a Data Stream until you verify no application is still using its Measurement ID.

      • Check knowledges bases, Site Kit, and WordPress plugins before creating duplicate Analytics properties.

      • Confirm the correct Google account is selected before making changes.

      • Document every Property, Data Stream, and Measurement ID after deployment.
