Reset a Chromebook to Factory Settings

Before You BeginA factory reset will:
  • Remove all local user accounts
  • Delete locally stored files and downloads
  • Remove custom settings
  • Restore the Chromebook to its original factory configuration


Files stored in Google Drive will remain available after you sign

back in.

Method 1: Reset Chromebook Using Powerwash
  1. Sign out of the Chromebook.
  2. Press:
    Ctrl + Alt + Shift + R
  3. Click Restart.
  4. Select Powerwash.
  5. Click Continue.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  7. Sign in with your Google account when setup is complete.

The Chromebook will restart and return to factory settings.




Method 2: Reset Chromebook from Settings

  1. Click the clock in the lower-right corner.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Click Advanced.
  4. Choose Reset Settings.
  5. Under Powerwash, click Reset.
  6. Confirm the reset and allow the Chromebook to restart.




Method 3: Recovery Mode (For Serious Problems)
If the Chromebook will not boot correctly:

  1. Turn off the Chromebook.
  2. Press and hold:
    Esc + Refresh
  3. Press the Power Button.
  4. Release the keys when the recovery screen appears.
  5. Follow the instructions to reinstall ChromeOS.



You may need a USB flash drive or SD card to create ChromeOS recovery media.




Common Questions

Will a factory reset remove viruses?
A Powerwash can remove most unwanted software, extensions, and user profile issues.

If the Chromebook is managed by a school or business, policies may be re-applied when the device reconnects to the internet.



Will I lose my files?

Files stored locally in the Downloads folder will be removed. Files stored in Google Drive will remain available after signing in again.



How long does a Chromebook reset take?

Most Chromebook resets take between 5 and 15 minutes depending on the model and internet connection.
